The meter can be off while costs stay on

A dead mile is any mile driven without a paying passenger or a clear, valuable purpose. It still uses fuel or charge, tyres, servicing capacity, and your time. Ten empty minutes may not feel important, but repeated after every weak job it becomes a second unpaid shift.

The useful measure is not simply empty mileage. It is the combination of empty time, empty miles, and what happened next. A deliberate move to a reliable pickup zone can be good positioning. Circling without a plan is just cost.

Measure the leak for one honest week

Record your start and finish mileage, paid mileage if the platform provides it, and the main reason for any long reposition. Do this for seven days before trying to optimise anything. A short sample is enough to reveal repeat patterns.

  • Trips that leave you far from your normal demand zones.
  • Airport drop-offs followed by long empty returns.
  • Waiting areas that often require another move.
  • Low-value jobs accepted mainly because the day feels quiet.

Use simple operating rules

Set a maximum empty distance you will accept for an ordinary pickup. Make exceptions only when the fare quality, destination, or follow-on demand clearly justifies it. After a drop-off, decide whether to wait, reposition once, or finish. Avoid the expensive middle state of drifting between several possible areas.

Pair jobs where possible. A return booking, a known airport arrival window, or a reliable event finish can turn what would have been a dead leg into planned capacity. The aim is not zero empty miles. The aim is fewer unplanned ones.

Judge the whole shift

A high fare can still produce a poor shift if it ends with a long empty drive. Compare net earnings with total door-to-door time and total mileage. This makes different job types comparable and helps you recognise which work only looks attractive on the booking screen.
